What happened to Cointelegraph?

So, yeah If you recently tried to search for Cointelegraph and thought it had disappeared from Google, you’re not alone. The site is still online, but a series of issues in 2025 significantly reduced its visibility.

Cointelegraph drop in Google search visibility

In late 2025, Cointelegraph experienced a fall in organic search traffic following a series of Google algorithm updates. Analysts tracking SEO performance reported that the site lost a large share of its search rankings in some cases even failing to appear for searches like “Cointelegraph.”

Data from many SEO platforms suggests the decline was a severe factor. Organic traffic reportedly dropped from several million monthly visits to only a fraction of that within weeks after October 2025. However, this type of sudden decline often happens when search engines tighten some key rules or quality, trust, and spam standards - particularly in sensitive sectors such as finance and cryptocurrency. Another highly possible factor discussed by analysts was Google’s crackdown on “site reputation abuse.” Reports suggested that sections of the site related to online gambling and iGaming may have contributed to the penalty or something similar incidents, prompting the outlet to remove those pages later.

Regardless of the exact cause, fewer readers were discovering Cointelegraph articles through search.

The June 2025 security incident

Earlier in 2025, Cointelegraph was also affected by a high-profile front-end security breach. Attackers injected malicious pop-ups into the website that attempted to trick users into connecting their crypto wallets through a fake token airdrop campaign. The pop-ups were designed to drain funds from unsuspecting users.

Security researchers reported that similar attacks targeted multiple crypto platforms at the time, highlighting growing risks across the industry. More details about the incident were reported here: What Happend to Cointelegraph.  Although the exploit was fixed quickly, incidents like this damage trust with users, browsers, and especially with search engines - especially when combined with algorithm-related visibility issues.

Conclusion

Cointelegraph hasn’t disappeared. The site continues publishing crypto news daily and remains accessible if you visit it directly. But the combination of Google algorithm changes, possible search penalties, and a security breach significantly reduced how easily readers could find the platform through search engines.
