COTI is now built on Ethereum. It operates as an ERC-20 token and is integrated directly into the Ethereum ecosystem through COTI V2, a Layer 2 privacy-preserving protocol. While COTI originally launched on its own Layer 1 chain known as Trustchain, that infrastructure is now considered legacy. The future of the protocol is fully aligned with Ethereum.

The transition to Ethereum marks a strategic shift for COTI. Ethereum provides a mature foundation with deep liquidity, established developer tools, and a vast network of wallets, applications, and bridges. By leveraging Ethereum’s base layer, COTI is able to focus on building advanced privacy features without having to maintain its own consensus network.

COTI V2 is structured as a modular Layer 2. It supports private smart contracts using a cryptographic method called garbled circuits. This allows developers to run encrypted logic on-chain, preserving privacy while retaining composability with Ethereum’s broader ecosystem. The ERC-20 version of the COTI token is central to this system. It is used for computation fees, staking, and governance.

The original COTI chain (Trustchain) was a DAG-based Layer 1 optimized for payments. It supported high-throughput transactions and powered products like ADA Pay. While it served a purpose during COTI’s early years, it is no longer used for new development. Users who still hold native COTI from that network can bridge their tokens to Ethereum through the official COTI bridge.

Today, COTI exists entirely on Ethereum infrastructure. It can be stored in any ERC-20 compatible wallet, traded on Ethereum-based DEXs, and integrated into dApps. Its Layer 2 smart contracts execute off-chain logic while anchoring back to Ethereum for security and finality. For users and developers entering the ecosystem, this means full compatibility with existing Ethereum tools. There is no need to install custom wallets, manage separate chains, or learn a new development stack. Everything runs through the Ethereum standard.

In short, COTI is no longer a standalone chain. It is a privacy-focused Layer 2 protocol on Ethereum, and its token is fully ERC-20.
